Smiley tutorial

I was reading the tutorial on adding smileys and decided to try it out, but I have a question first. It says I need to override the print_entry function. I looked in my theme layer and I don't seem to have the code in there that the tutorial is talking about. I followed the link in the tutorial that takes you to another tutorial on how to override the print_entry. I'm a little confused at that point. That code seems to change so many things and I like the look of my journal. I don't need to customize quite that much. Am I reading something wrong? Do I need the whole code from the second tutorial in order to add smilies?
