Graphic @ the top

i just wanna be able to insert a graphic @ the top of my page and still keep the top navigation bar, like this person's http://www.livejournal.com/users/dawnydiesel/

i have tried the graphic tutorial, but it is hell confusing, and it replaces everything!

i just wanna a graphic @ the top with my bar, if u could please help?
