raising sidebar when used with header

I've looked through all of the Page Layout tutorials and can't find what I'm looking for.  (So sorry if I missed something, but if I did it's pretty well hidden.)  I'd like to have my header image at the top of the page, but then have my sidebar begin at the top of the page as well, not be moved down the width of the header like all the codes I've seen so far.  You can see what I'm trying to describe at this journal.  See how the navigation and user info box are to the right of the header image instead of beneath it?  That's what I'd really love to do with my journal.  Can anyone out there help me?
